Key Quotes

"Instead of letting Islam transform us some Muslims are trying to transform Islam to serve their political agenda. They are using "Islam" to kill, murder innocent civilians. Something the prophet would never have condoned - sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam. Remember Surah 13 verse 11 "God does not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves."
How can we end the oppression of the Muslims by resorting to even worse behaviour? If our spiritual and our moral condition worsens, how can we expect God to improve our economic and our political conditions? This is the fallacy of the self styled jihadists who murder innocent civilians.

There are many who are seeking God, but instead end up following the devil.

الله أكبر KEY W0RDSالله أكبر

20 KEY W0RDS FR0M THE MEDiA DiCTi0NARY..

GENDER
*physchological and cultural aspects of behaviour associated with masculinity & femininity, acquired through socialisation, in accordance with the expectations of a particular society.
*representations of gender increasingly challenge traditional concepts of masculinity & femininity.

This relates to my independent study as there are some gender stereotypes which are enforced as well as gender stereotypes. For example the strong, main characters are male and the women are used soley for male gaze and are of very little significance within the series and shown to not be respected or have respect for themselves.

STEREOTYPE
the social classification of a group of people by indetifying common characteristics and universally applying them in an often oversimplified and generalised way, such that the classifcation represents calue judgements and assumptions about the group concerned.

There are many stereotypes which are discussed within my study as well as stereotypes being what my hypothesis is based on. The stereotypes to be discussed is of Muslims, Black Muslims & Converts to Islam.

IDEOLOGY
a set of attitudes, beliefs and values held in common by a group of people and culturally reproduced within that community to sustain its particular way of life.

Ideologies within the show are -Patriotic, Islamic, Patriarchal, Extremist, Misogynistic etc.

VOYEUR
a person who watches the behaviour of others without their knowledge from a detached, non-involved position and for reasons of self-gratification.

There is an element of voyeurism within the show as the series begins with it seeming that Darywn is being followed until we realise he is part of the FBI. Voyeurism is present throughout as the cell is constantly being surveyed and kept track of.

REPRESENTATION
the process whereby the media construct versions of people, places and events in images, words or sound for transmission through the media texts to an audience.

My study intends to discuss how Muslims & Islam is represented after the events of 9/11. The main focus is on the representation of Muslims & Islam however representation of Black Muslims, Converts, Extremists & Moderate Muslims will be looked into as well.

RACISM
Practices and behaviour involving social and economic discrimination, based on the false assumption that one particular ethnic group or race is culturally and biologically inferior to another.

My study discusses the racism towards black muslims within America. Their faith is doubted and there conversion never appreciated. My study will show that despite the racial stereotypes black muslims face it is a Black Muslim who proves himself to be a true muslim within the show.

HERO
the principal male or female protagonist in any narrative, with whom the audience identifies and who exhibits moral virtues in line with dominant ideology.

The Hero of the show is a black muslim. Its not longer unconventional for a black character to be the lead as it had been a few decades back however it is unconventional for the lead to be a black man who is also a practicing muslim. the hero in the show, like the show, subverts many misconceptions relating to Islam and the issues discussed within the show.

PATRIARCHY
male domination of the political, cultural and socioeconomic system.

The show is very patriarchal and follows the ideologies. There are only two women with a role in the show, one is seen as a "whore" and the other works for the FBI but is not respected at all for her role. The role of women in the show is somewhat ironic as it is Islam that is associated with oppressing and disrespecting their women however this show has the western women being disrespected, whilst Farik has upmost respect for his wife.

CULTURE
the social practices of a group of people, usually involving shared language, history, values beliefs lifestyle, appearance, dress and entertainment.

The show is full of Islamic culture. It presents the audience with Muslim leads, mosques, Quranic quotes and arabic phrases throughout.

MULTICULTURALISM
The encouragement of western society becoming more diverse in all espects of culture, ethnicity, Gender and Sexuality.

The show in many ways emphasises the need for a positive outlook towards multiculturalism and acceptance of others. Although the show is about terrorists it gives an insight into true Islam and true Muslims through characters such as Sayd Abdal Malik. Also with characters such as Darwyn (FBI agent) and Alim (chief in the FBI) being practising muslims it gives the audience a new viewpoint towards the followers of Islam by providing more moderate characters and encouraging acceptance of others in society.

TARGET AUDIENCE
The intended audience for a media text. When producing a media text for mass consumption, identification of a target audience is essential so that media institutions can assess the likely response to the product and the investment risks.

Relevant to my project as Im discussing the effects of Muslim stereotypes on the audience.

ANTI HERO
The protagonist in a narrative who lacks the qualities of an archetypal hero but nevertheless attracts the sympathy and support of the audience or reader.

The hero within my main text isn't the archetypal hero as he is a Black Sunni Muslim, which is very unusual. But he gains the support of the audience quickly and by the end saves America from a terrorist attack.
There is not a main hero in the show "Little Mosque on the Prairie" however one of the key characters is a young Iman (religious preacher) as well as a hijab wearing feminist doctor, both which are unusual in shows.

POST FEMINISM
Part of the postmodern perspective which takes the acheivements of feminism for granted.

The show is definetly carries a patriarchal ideology and does take feminism for granted as women within the show are there merely for sex and shown as weak and inferior to the men.

AVANT GARDE
An experimental style of film or television production that breaks new ground in taste, content and treatment, often attracting criticism from the mainstream for its radical challenge to the orthodox.

"Sleeper Cell" present a Black Muslim lead which challenges the orthodox as if there are black leads they are never Muslim, the few Black Muslim leads are shown through them being criminals for example in the American TV Series "Oz".
Another text which I may be using is "Britz" this show recieved a lot of criticism as well as praise. The show presents the audience with a Muslim Pakistani brother and sister, a brother who embraces the western style of life and a sister who turns to fundamentalism to seek a release for her despair. It also shows the first female suicide bomber in England which is very controversial.
